Harrison Ford for Nature International

Harrison Ford would like you to know that should our mistreatment of the planet lead to our demise, the natural world won't stop to grieve.

"Nature doesn't need people, people need nature; nature would survive the extinction of the human being and go on just fine, but human culture, human beings, cannot survive without nature," Ford tells Yahoo's On the Radar. "We have to understand in value what the services of nature are so that we can understand that degrading them is an irreplaceable resource that no amount of money or human ingenuity can replace."

A longtime environmentalist and vice chair of the group Conservation International, Ford has been active over the last month promoting protections for natural resources, in particular access to fresh water.

“It puts such stress on some of the most fragile nations in the world,” he told the BBC earlier this month. "We’re all interconnected. For example, a simple lack of fresh water can lead to population dislocation, which can lead to political radicalization, which can lead to great pressure on the states that receive refugees because of a migrating population."

While Ford's name certainly brings attention the cause, the 70-year-old isn't keen to let his celebrity overshadow his passionate involvement.

"We have a lot of names involved with this organization, and my name is the least of them," he tells On the Radar. "I serve on the executive committee which oversees the growth of the organization. I serve on the communications committees. I'm not a poster boy for Conservation International. I'm a working member of the board."
