A SCHOOL packed with hungry students is sure to generate a lot of waste from all those plastic bottles and sandwich wrappers. Urrbrae Agricultural High School wants to recycle as much of that as possible. The school is developing a waste/recycling facility using a $10,000 “Zero Waste” grant from the State Government, which was announced on World Environment Day, June 5.

Assistant principal of agriculture Dean Cresswell says they currently have small recycling stations around the school but hope to set up the main station by next month.

We are an environmentally focused school, a lot of kids come here to study environment, so you want to be as proactive as you can,” he says.

“We’re always looking for whatever opportunities there are to recycle and get something back for it.”

Mitcham Primary School received $6000 for the construction of support infrastructure for recycling.

Environment and Conservation Minister Paul Caica says more than $250,000 in grants had been awarded to 45 school and community group projects.
