The president of the House of Representatives, Michel Temer, and the president of the Senate, José Sarney, both signed the pledge to EH.

Senator Marina Silva also pledged her support to Earth Hour 2010.

This coming Saturday, March 27, both the Federal House of Representatives and the Federal Senate will also participate in the Earth Hour and the lights on both buildings in Brasilia will be switched off from 8:30 to 9:30 PM, as a symbolic gesture to warn against global warming.

The House of Representatives joined Earth Hour on Thursday (March 24), as the President of the House, Congressman Michel Temer; received a mobilization kit (T-shirt and flashlight) from WWF-Brazil's Conservation Director, Claudio Maretti, and signed the Earth Hour Pledge.

Maretti explained that this year is the International Year of Biodiversity and Earth Hour in Brazil emphasizes that conserving terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is the best way to prepare to endure the impacts of severe climate situations.  In Brazil, deforestation is the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change.

"By joining the movement, the Federal House of Representatives gives an example and takes upon itself the responsibility of discussing laws - such as the Forest Code -- in a more accountable way", said Maretti.
