In California, farmers have stopped using previously fertile land after a three year drought made water too expensive to use for irrigation. Aaron Mendell, the founder of San Francisco-based startup WaterFX, developed a technology that uses solar energy to pump water from aquifers below the desert and clean it for watering plants.
