The Mangrove Action Project

Description

The animation illustrates the growing importance of mangroves to the health of the planet; storing in some cases 5x more carbon than inland rainforests, being an integral link between land and ocean, adapting to sea level rise, protecting and producing for coastal communities, and helping to mitigate climate change. These unique and critical ecosystems need protecting and restoring.

The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) is dedicated to reversing the degradation and loss of mangrove forests. These unique coastal ecosystems linking land and sea, play a vital role in helping to keep our planet healthy. Mangroves once sheltered three-quarters of tropical and subtropical shorelines. Today, only half remain.

Witnessing firsthand the rapid devastation of the world’s mangroves, the founders of MAP decided in 1992 that it was time to form a global network to address the loss of these coastal forests worldwide. By demonstrating the importance of mangrove forests through our programs, we are striving for a protected and restored coastline managed sustainably by local communities.

Our approach involves networking, education, advocacy, conservation and restoration, as well as sustainable community-based development tackling present day crises such as climate change and sea level rise.
