"SLAP stands for “sea level awareness project.” It’s a local community activist project designed to raise awareness of the danger of sea level rise in my community here in Ventura.
If Greenland completely melts (which, scientists say could happen before 2100,) sea level would rise over 20 feet worldwide. My town, Ventura would be half way underwater. So we (a group of about 50 5th-8th graders) are working on installing over 100 poles in my city to warn of the potential sea level rise.
We have split into 5 groups: design, engineering, permissions, fundraising, manufacture, and media," says 13 year old Alec Loorz, student at Ventura Charter School and founder of Kids Vs. Global Warming. The first poles will be installed in late June 2008. Check out their site for more information.
