"Abrupt" Climate Change in the summer of 2012

Notable climate anomalies began in March when more than 15,000 warm weather records across the country were broken. Many people are starting to ask the same question: As the climate changes, can we expect more of this?

The average temperature for the contiguous United States during June was 2°F above the twentieth-century average. Scorching temperatures during the second half of the month broke or tied over 170 all-time temperature records in cities across America. June temperatures also contributed to a record-warm first half of the year and the warmest 12-month period the nation has experienced since record keeping began in 1895.

U.S. Abrupt Climate Change 2012
The world’s and especially America’s environment has gone mad during the summer of 2012. Abrupt climate change is clearly upon us, and life-giving ecosystems are visibly failing, portending doom for our shared biosphere, all life, and humanity. Given overshoot of ecological boundaries, and failure to pursue concerted national and global sustainable development and ecological sustainability policy, 2012 may well be the year Earth’s death through collapse of its one shared biosphere becomes inevitable. read more...
Catastrophic Climate Change can Happen in an Instant
Meteorologists have traditionally ignored the oceans’ role in meteorological processes. And this would seem to make sense on the face of it: if you are studying the weather it is natural to focus on the atmosphere, not the oceans. But we are coming to understand that the oceans are an equal partner with the atmosphere in producing the weather, and the dominant partner with regard to long-range weather patterns. read more...
Colorado fires, severe storms, floods and record-setting heat: The summer of hellfire and brimstone?
It’s only the beginning of the summer here in the U.S., and ferocious storms and extreme heat  have already caused many deaths, hurricane-level property destruction, and wide-spread power outages in the east. In the mid-section of the country, triple digit temperatures pose a danger to health. Many western states are battling numerous wildfires. read more...
