The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
Islands and their surrounding near-shore marine areas constitute unique ecosystems often comprising many plant and animal species that are endemic—found nowhere else on Earth. The legacy of a unique evolutionary history these ecosystems are irreplaceable treasures. They are also key to the livelihood, economy, well-being and cultural identity of 600 million islanders—one-tenth of the world’s population. Island Biodiversity is this year's focus. |

World-Wide Biodiversity Loss
 Aiming to engage ordinary citizens in policymaking for a healthy planet, 34 meetings were held in Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, India, South Africa, Uganda, the US, Vietnam, Zambia and other countries. About 100 people selected for diverse backgrounds – gender, occupation, education and residential location – participated in each country.
Some 70 per cent of participants said they knew almost nothing about biodiversity before joining the project. Almost half of participants from the developing countries thought they were affected by biodiversity loss, while only 22 per cent of developed country participants thought the same.

Get behind the camera and prove it! Heal the Bay invites young California filmmakers in grades 5-12 to express their passion for the ocean by creating a short film for our first ever Student Film Festival! Whether it’s mild, wild, silly or serious, your film should be as fresh and original as you are.
In addition to an exclusive screening event, all entries will be in the running for the Grand Prize, awarded to the filmmakers who most compellingly depict their connection to the coast.
Submissions will be accepted from May 1 through July 1, so start stoking your inspiration!
